Solution consulting providers get brought in when a company knows what outcome it needs but doesn't have the people, platform expertise, or spare engineering time to get there itself. The work is concrete: scoping a system, designing an architecture, then building or configuring it — custom software, a data pipeline, a machine learning model, a cloud migration, an ERP rollout, or a marketing automation platform that's been bought but never properly set up. When it's done, something that didn't exist or didn't work now runs — a legacy system is replaced, a manual process is automated, two disconnected tools finally talk to each other, or a product ships that the internal team couldn't have shipped alone on the same timeline.
People end up here because something internal has hit a ceiling. Engineering headcount is fixed and a project has to happen anyway. A platform like an ERP or CRM was purchased with big promises and is now sitting half-configured, unused by the sales or ops team it was meant to help. Data lives in five systems that don't reconcile, so nobody trusts the numbers. Or leadership has decided on a digital transformation, cloud move, or AI initiative and has no one on staff who has actually done one before and knows where it goes wrong.
Providers in this category split roughly two ways. Some function as extended engineering teams — you hand them a spec, they write and ship code, often at a lower cost through offshore or nearshore delivery. Others operate more like consultancies: they diagnose the problem first, design the solution, and only then build or oversee the build, sometimes specialising deeply in one platform (a CRM, a marketing automation suite, an ERP) rather than working across every stack. Worth comparing them on: whether they own outcomes or just hours, whether they transfer knowledge and code ownership back to your team or keep you dependent on them, how deep their platform-specific expertise actually goes versus generic development capability, and whether their typical engagement size and delivery model match the scale of what you're trying to fix.
