Businesses in this category run a company's social media as an ongoing job, not a one-off project. That means building a content calendar, writing and designing the posts, scheduling and publishing across platforms, responding to comments and messages, running paid social campaigns, sourcing or managing influencers, and pulling together the monthly reporting that shows what actually happened as a result. Some also fold in adjacent work like SEO, PR or broader digital marketing, but the core deliverable is a social presence that's active, on-brand and measured, without someone in-house having to own it day to day.

The usual trigger is that social media has become a job nobody has time for. A founder or marketing manager has been posting sporadically between other responsibilities, the account has gone quiet for weeks at a stretch, or a junior hire has been given it as an add-on and it shows. Sometimes the problem is the opposite: there's a steady flow of posts but no strategy behind them, engagement is flat, follower growth has stalled, or money is going into boosted posts and ads with no clear read on what's converting. Often it's a specific event forcing the issue — a product launch, a rebrand, a competitor visibly outpacing them online, or a board asking why social hasn't produced any leads.

What you're buying is essentially a team you don't have to hire, so the differences between providers come down to what kind of team they actually are. Some are generalists who'll run everything from strategy to community management to paid ads across all platforms; others specialise — organic content and community only, paid social exclusively, or influencer campaigns as a standalone service. Team size and structure matter more than it might seem: a small shop may give you a dedicated person who knows your brand well but limited capacity during busy periods, while a larger agency can staff up quickly but may rotate account managers. Worth comparing directly: whether they design and write content in-house or subcontract it, how reporting is structured and how honestly it separates vanity metrics from commercial results, whether pricing is a flat retainer or scales with ad spend, and whether their past work is in your industry or a generic portfolio. Location can matter too — a locally based team may understand your market and time zone better, while an offshore team can be considerably cheaper for the same volume of output.
