These are the businesses hired to make a website show up when someone searches for what that company sells. In practice that means crawling the site for technical faults, fixing page speed and mobile rendering, cleaning up site structure and internal linking, researching what terms buyers actually type into Google, rewriting or adding pages around those terms, and building the external links and citations that tell search engines the site is worth trusting. When it works, pages that used to sit on page three start appearing for searches that convert, and traffic keeps arriving without a media budget behind it.

Most people end up looking for this because organic traffic has stalled or dropped and nobody inside the company can explain why. Maybe a redesign or a platform migration quietly broke rankings that took years to build. Maybe a competitor now sits above them for every term that matters. Maybe the marketing team is spending more each quarter on paid ads because organic search brings in almost nothing, or a Google algorithm update wiped out traffic overnight with no warning. In smaller companies it's often simpler than that: the site was built, nobody has ever done anything to it since, and it isn't found for anything.

How a provider goes about fixing this varies a lot, and that's where the real differences between them show up. Some are technical specialists who focus on crawlability, site architecture and page speed and leave content to someone else. Some are content-led, building topic clusters and rewriting existing pages to match search intent. Others concentrate on authority and link building, which is slower and easier to do badly. Many are full-service agencies that bundle SEO with PPC, web design or social, which suits a company that wants one point of contact but can dilute specialist SEO knowledge.

What's worth comparing across all of them is what a technical audit actually finds before you sign anything, how they report progress (real ranking and traffic data versus vague activity reports), what pricing model they use — retainer, project, or a performance element tied to outcomes — and whether they've worked with businesses of your size and sector, since e-commerce, local business and B2B SaaS SEO are genuinely different disciplines. Be wary of anyone promising fast rankings; legitimate SEO work takes months to show results, and speed claims are usually a sign of shortcuts that get penalised later.
