These providers get hired to sit between a publisher's ad inventory and the demand that wants to buy it — setting up the ad server, wiring in header bidding or a mediation stack, connecting SSPs and demand partners, and tuning floor prices and waterfall logic so more of a site's or app's impressions actually get sold at a fair price. Once they're in place, a publisher stops manually juggling a handful of direct deals and instead has a system that auctions each impression across dozens of buyers in real time, reports what actually cleared, and flags when a partner's fill rate or CPMs drop off.

People start looking for this when ad revenue feels lower than it should be given the traffic they have, when a single ad network is the only demand source and its rates keep sliding, when latency from too many tags is slowing page or app load times, or when nobody in-house actually understands why yesterday's RPM dropped 20%. It also comes up when a publisher is growing fast — more traffic, more inventory, more platforms (web, app, CTV) — and the ad setup that worked at a smaller scale is now a tangle of scripts, unclear reporting, and demand partners nobody is actively managing.

The approaches split roughly into three shapes. Some are managed services or agencies who take over your ad stack entirely, optimise it, and take a revenue share — good if you have no ad ops resource in-house. Some are ad server or SSP software you run yourself or through your own team, giving you more control but requiring someone who actually knows header bidding and RTB. And some are point solutions — app mediation SDKs, ad fraud detection, header bidding wrappers — meant to plug into a stack you already have rather than replace it. Worth comparing vendors on: how demand is sourced (owned marketplace vs. reselling other SSPs), whether pricing is a flat fee, a percentage of revenue lift, or a revenue share on total ad income, how much reporting and control you keep versus hand over, and how well they handle the specific format you need — display, video, native, in-app, or CTV — since a vendor strong in web header bidding isn't necessarily the right pick for app monetization or connected TV inventory.
