What changes for the customer is the lead time and the commitment — you post the need, set a price or a shift, and get matched to available people (or submissions) without going through a recruitment cycle or putting anyone on permanent payroll.
People end up here because normal hiring is too slow or too heavy for the problem in front of them. A retail manager is short-staffed for the weekend rush and can't wait three weeks for an agency placement. An operations lead has a seasonal spike in the warehouse and doesn't want to carry the headcount once it's over. A small marketing team needs a piece of creative work by Friday and has no in-house designer. The providers here solve this in a few distinct ways, and the differences matter when you're choosing one. Some run instant-match apps for shift-based physical labour — warehousing, retail, hospitality — where workers claim open shifts through an app and you pay per hour worked. Others run contest or bid-based marketplaces for creative and knowledge work, where multiple freelancers submit competing work and you pick the one you want. Others are microtask or crowd platforms built for splitting large jobs, like data annotation, into small paid units completed by many people at once. A fourth group handles general task and errand matching for one-off physical or admin jobs.
What separates them in practice is how they handle vetting and liability (are workers background-checked, insured, and classified as the platform's employees or as independent contractors you're contracting directly), how fast they can actually fill a request in your location and industry, what quality control exists on submitted work, and how pricing works — flat project fee, hourly rate, or commission on top of what the worker is paid. Worth comparing on fill rate for your specific type of role, not just the size of the worker pool they claim to have.
