The work here is building and fitting small pieces of software into the systems a company already runs on — mostly Salesforce, sometimes HubSpot or another CRM — so that a particular task stops being manual. That might mean pulling email and calendar data into the CRM automatically, routing a new lead to the right rep in seconds instead of hours, generating a document or contract from CRM data with one click, or giving field staff a mobile app that works when there's no signal. The output is a working add-on or configured module inside a system your staff already use every day, not a new platform to learn.
People end up looking for this because something inside their existing CRM or office setup isn't doing what the business needs, and nobody wants to rebuild the whole system to fix it. Sales reps are copying data between email and Salesforce by hand. Leads sit unassigned overnight because routing rules don't exist or don't work for a multi-team setup. Reports take a day to compile because the numbers aren't structured the way finance needs them. Or a Salesforce instance has been customised so many times that nobody trusts what's in it, and someone's been told to clean it up without breaking anything that currently works.
Providers split roughly into two kinds of work: those who sell a packaged app — usually listed on the Salesforce AppExchange — that does one job (email capture, mapping, document generation, data cleansing) and gets installed and configured; and those who work as implementation or consulting shops, building custom objects, workflows and integrations specific to your setup. The packaged-app route is faster and cheaper but only fits if your process matches what the app assumes. The consulting route costs more and takes longer but bends to your actual workflow.
When comparing them, look at whether they know your specific CRM edition and existing customisations, not just the platform in general — a firm that's only worked with simple Sales Cloud setups will struggle with a heavily modified org. Ask how they handle ongoing support after go-live, since office software breaks quietly when a platform update ships, not loudly. And check company size against your project: a two-person specialist app vendor might be excellent for one narrow job but has no bench if you need a larger rollout across regions or business units.
