These are the platforms and networks you hire to get your advertising to look like part of the page rather than an ad bolted onto it — the sponsored article recommendations at the bottom of a news site, the promoted listing in a feed that matches the surrounding posts, the in-app content unit that reads like editorial. Some run the supply side: publisher networks and content recommendation widgets that give sites a way to monetise beyond banner inventory. Others run the demand side: self-serve buying platforms, programmatic native exchanges, or managed campaigns that get a brand's sponsored content placed and optimised across a network of publisher sites and apps. A few work at the content layer itself, producing the sponsored articles, videos or listings that go into those placements.

People end up here because their display advertising has stopped working the way it used to. Click-through rates on banners have collapsed, ad blockers strip out anything that looks like a standard unit, and audiences have learned to scroll past anything in a box with a border. Publishers are watching the same thing from the other side — banner CPMs falling while readers use ad blockers or simply ignore the space — and are looking for inventory that readers will actually engage with. Brands trying to reach people through content marketing or affiliate channels find that without a distribution mechanism, good content just sits there unseen. The common thread is a need for advertising that earns attention by not looking like advertising, without becoming so blended in that it misleads the reader or breaches disclosure rules.

The main split to understand is between the platforms that run the technology — bidding, targeting, placement, reporting — and the agencies that also handle strategy and content production for you. Within the tech layer, some are built as content recommendation widgets sitting on publisher pages (the classic "you may also like" units), others as in-feed native ad exchanges bought programmatically alongside display and video, and others as card-linked or transaction-based native formats used in retail and finance. Compare them on where their inventory actually sits (which publishers, which apps, which geographies), how targeting works (contextual versus behavioural, and what data that relies on), pricing model (CPC, CPM, or revenue share), and how rigorously they vet publisher quality and brand safety — native's blurred line between ad and content is exactly where fraud and low-quality placements tend to hide. Reporting depth also varies a lot: some give you clean attribution back to conversions, others mostly report clicks and impressions.
