These are the people you hire to make email actually produce revenue rather than just exist as a marketing checkbox. The work is concrete: building segmented lists and automation flows (welcome sequences, abandoned cart, win-back, post-purchase), writing and designing the campaigns that go out, setting up and configuring the ESP or CRM (Klaviyo, Mailchimp, HubSpot, and similar), fixing the technical side of deliverability — SPF, DKIM, DMARC, domain warming, list hygiene — and running the A/B tests and reporting that tell you which subject lines, sends and flows are actually driving opens, clicks and revenue. Some are hired to run the whole channel end to end; others come in for one specific job, like untangling a deliverability problem or rebuilding a Klaviyo account after an in-house attempt stalled.
People end up here because something concrete has broken or never got built. Open and click rates have quietly dropped and nobody knows why. Emails are landing in spam or promotions tabs after a domain migration or a spike in send volume. There's a list of tens of thousands of contacts and no automation running against it, so abandoned carts and lapsed customers generate nothing. A founder or marketing lead has been sending campaigns manually in whatever tool the business started with, and it's now costing more in missed revenue than it would to have someone run it properly. Or a fast-growing company has outgrown its in-house capacity and needs the channel run professionally rather than as a side task.
Providers here split along a few real lines worth checking before you commit. Some are full-service agencies who'll handle strategy, copy, design and send in one package; others are narrow specialists — deliverability-only consultants, or shops that live entirely inside one platform like Klaviyo and know its segmentation and flow logic in detail. Some price on retainer, some per project, a few on performance tied to revenue attribution, which changes how aggressively they'll push volume versus quality. Compare them on which platforms they actually specialise in versus merely support, whether they do the creative work themselves or need it supplied, how they report results (opens and clicks, or revenue and deliverability metrics that hold up under scrutiny), and whether their team size matches the ongoing volume of sends you actually need managed.
