These are the firms and freelance-turned-agency teams that get hired to build, fix or extend a Salesforce org. The work is concrete: configuring Sales Cloud so a pipeline actually reflects how deals move, standing up Service Cloud for a support team, wiring Pardot or Marketing Cloud into the CRM so marketing and sales share one view of a lead, writing Apex or building on Force.com when the point-and-click tools run out, and migrating data and process from an old system or a previous botched setup into something usable. Some also build and maintain AppExchange apps that plug gaps Salesforce itself doesn't cover.
People end up looking for this when Salesforce has stopped being an asset and started being a chore. Reps won't log activity because the fields don't match how they sell. Reports don't tie out because three people set up custom fields differently over the years. A new product line or region needs its own process and nobody in-house knows how to build it safely. Marketing Cloud or Pardot was switched on but never properly connected to Sales Cloud, so leads vanish into a gap. Or there's simply no admin anymore — the person who built the org left, and every change now feels risky.
Providers solve this in different ways, and the differences matter more than the pitch decks suggest. Some run fixed-scope implementation projects and hand the org back at go-live; others sell ongoing managed admin support, effectively acting as your outsourced Salesforce team month to month. Some specialise deeply in one cloud — Marketing Cloud, Pardot, Community Cloud — while others are generalists who'll touch anything in the platform. Firm size tracks this too: larger firms handle multi-cloud, multi-region rollouts with programme management overhead; smaller shops move faster and cheaper on a single-team implementation but may lack bench strength if someone leaves mid-project. Worth comparing directly: Salesforce partner tier and certifications actually held by the people doing the work (not just the company logo), whether they've shipped in your industry, whether pricing is project-based or retainer, and whether they document the build well enough that you're not dependent on them forever.
