The work here is rebuilding how a company runs on technology: replacing a legacy system that nobody can safely change, building custom software where an off-the-shelf tool no longer fits, moving infrastructure to the cloud, wiring up an ERP so finance and operations see the same numbers, or building the data pipelines and models that let a business actually use the data it collects. When it's done, a task that used to take a team a week of manual work runs on its own, departments stop keeping separate spreadsheets of the truth, and decisions get made on current information instead of last quarter's report.
People end up here because something has stopped scaling. A system built for 50 people is being asked to run 500. An acquisition has left two companies with two sets of software that don't talk to each other. A customer-facing app is slow, buggy, or impossible to change without breaking something else. Or a project has been agreed at board level — move to the cloud, replace the ERP, put AI into the product — and the internal team either doesn't have the time or hasn't done this kind of build before and doesn't want to learn on a project this expensive to get wrong.
Providers in this space differ mainly in where they start and how they're structured to work with you. Some lead with strategy and assessment — mapping current systems and processes before recommending what to build — while others are engineering-first and will start writing code against a defined scope. Some specialise in a platform (a particular ERP, cloud provider, or CRM) or a technology (machine learning, data engineering), others work across the stack but within one industry. Engagement models vary too: fixed-scope project delivery, ongoing staff augmentation embedded in your team, or a managed service that keeps running the system after go-live. Worth comparing directly: whether they've built on your specific stack before, whether pricing is time-and-materials or fixed price, how much of the team is offshore versus local, and whether they disappear after launch or stay on to run and improve what they built.
