Hire one and what changes is operational — you stop manually setting bids in ten different dashboards, you get a single view of where spend is going across mobile, display, native and programmatic channels, and decisions about targeting, pacing and placement start happening on data rather than guesswork.

People end up here because something concrete is broken. A marketing team is spending across several channels with no consistent way to compare performance, or spend is climbing while conversions stay flat and nobody can say why. A publisher has inventory sitting unsold or being sold too cheaply through a single network. Someone has noticed a chunk of traffic looks like bots and suspects click fraud is eating the budget. Or growth has stalled because the audience data used for targeting is thin, third-party cookies are disappearing, and campaigns are reaching fewer of the right people than they used to.

The providers here split roughly by which side of the transaction they serve and how much they automate. Some are demand-side, built for advertisers to plan, bid and optimise campaigns; others are supply-side, built for publishers to manage and price their inventory; some sit in the middle as networks or data platforms matching the two. Within that, the real differences to compare are: how much is self-serve dashboard versus managed service with an account team doing the work for you; how fraud detection actually works (rules-based filtering versus behavioural modelling) and how transparent the reporting is; whether the data layer relies on first-party data you own or third-party matching that's getting harder to rely on; and how deep the integration goes with the exchanges and channels you actually use, since a platform that's excellent for mobile app install campaigns may be weak on native or CTV. Pricing models vary too — CPM, CPC, percentage of managed spend — and that affects whether the incentives are aligned with your results or just with volume.
