A demand side platform is what a media buyer logs into to actually place programmatic ads: connect to the exchanges and supply platforms where publishers sell impressions, set targeting rules based on audience data, decide how much to bid for each impression in real time, and pull reporting on what ran, where, and what it cost. Hire one of these and your team stops doing manual insertion orders with individual publishers or ad networks and instead runs campaigns across thousands of sites, apps and CTV inventory from a single interface, with budgets and bids adjusted automatically as the campaign runs.

People end up looking for this when their advertising has outgrown direct deals but they have no way to buy at scale without wasting spend. Maybe marketing is stuck negotiating placements site by site and can't reach the audience segments they actually care about, or they're running display and video through an ad network with no visibility into which impressions they paid for, no control over frequency, and rising concern about ads landing next to bad content or going to bots. Others have the audience data — from a CRM or CDP — but no way to act on it in an auction, or they're trying to expand into mobile, native or connected TV and need inventory access they don't have.

What these platforms differ on is real. Some are self-serve, built for in-house trading desks that want direct control over bidding strategy and are comfortable managing campaigns themselves; others are managed service, where the vendor's team sets strategy and optimises on your behalf, which costs more but suits teams without dedicated traders. They vary in which inventory they can actually reach — some specialise in mobile or CTV, others cover open web display and video broadly — and in how their fees work, whether that's a flat platform licence, a percentage of media spend, or bundled into a managed rate that makes true costs harder to see. Machine learning bid optimisation is standard across the board, but the quality of the underlying data partnerships, the strength of fraud and brand safety filtering, and how granular the reporting gets are where they genuinely separate. Worth comparing on inventory reach for your specific channels, minimum spend commitments, fee transparency, and whether your existing audience data can be plugged in directly.
