These businesses get hired to actually produce written content on a recurring basis: blog posts, website copy, product descriptions, articles, whitepapers, email sequences, ghostwritten thought-leadership pieces. You send a brief or a content calendar, and a writer (sometimes assigned, sometimes chosen from a pool) turns it into a finished draft, usually with an editor checking it before it reaches you. What changes for the customer is that content stops being the thing that gets pushed to next week — pages get published, the blog keeps a schedule, SEO pages actually get written instead of just planned.

Or there is someone writing, but it's inconsistent: deadlines slip, quality varies piece to piece, and nobody has time to edit properly. Either way, the symptom is the same — content that should exist doesn't, or exists but isn't good enough to publish without a rewrite.
The providers here solve this in a few different shapes. Some are essentially staffing: a roster of freelance writers matched to your brief, with you managing quality directly. Others run it as a managed service — an editor sits between you and the writer, so you're buying a finished piece rather than a draft. A smaller group specialises narrowly, in technical writing, proofreading and editing only, or heavy SEO-driven content built around keyword research rather than a topic list you supply.
What actually separates them is worth checking before you commit: whether you get a consistent writer who learns your product and voice or a different one each time, how much editing happens before delivery versus how much lands back on you, whether pricing is per word (which rewards padding) or per piece, and whether SEO is baked into the process — keyword targeting, briefs built from search intent — or bolted on as an afterthought. Turnaround time and revision policy matter more in practice than most buyers expect going in.
