These businesses are hired to produce the written material a company needs but doesn't have time or in-house skill to write itself: blog posts and articles on a schedule, website and product copy, case studies, whitepapers, social captions, technical documentation, even ghostwritten books or executive thought-leadership pieces. The work is concrete — a brief goes in, research and drafting happen, a writer (sometimes with an editor behind them) produces copy matched to a brand's voice, an SEO keyword, or a technical subject, and what comes out is ready to publish rather than a rough draft that still needs rewriting internally.
People end up looking for this when content has become a bottleneck rather than a strength. A marketing team knows it needs to publish regularly to support SEO or demand generation but doesn't have a writer, or has one who's now stretched across ten other things. Or the freelancer someone was using has become unreliable, and quality and deadlines have started slipping just as content volume needs to go up, not down.
Providers solve this in different ways, and the differences matter when you're comparing them. Some run a large bench of freelance writers matched to briefs by category or niche, which gives you volume and speed but less consistency between pieces; others run a smaller in-house team, which costs more per piece but gives tighter control over voice and quality. Some specialise — technical and SaaS content, finance, e-commerce product copy, ghostwriting — while others write broadly across topics. Pricing runs from per-word rates to flat per-project fees to monthly retainers, and that usually tracks with how much strategy and editing is bundled in versus just drafting. It's worth checking whether they do keyword research and content planning themselves or expect you to supply briefs, what their editing and revision process looks like, how they use AI-assisted drafting versus writing entirely by hand, and what their actual turnaround time is once volume picks up rather than for a single sample piece.
