Approaches split mainly on how much strategy versus pure production they offer. Some agencies act as an outsourced editorial team — you get a calendar, writers, an editor, and a publishing cadence, with limited involvement in your broader marketing plan. Others sit closer to consultants, building the keyword and content strategy, tying it to funnel stage and sales enablement, and only then producing the work, often alongside SEO or link-building services. There's also a split by depth of specialism: some agencies work across any industry with generalist writers and research processes, while others focus on a sector (SaaS, finance, healthcare) and bring subject-matter fluency that saves you briefing time.

When comparing them, look at how they handle subject-matter expertise versus generalist writing, whether reporting ties content to pipeline or just to traffic and rankings, how much editorial control and voice consistency you keep versus handing it fully to their process, and what happens to quality and turnaround at volume. Pricing models vary too — per-piece, retainer, or scoped project — and that often reflects whether you're buying steady output or a managed strategy with output as one part of it.
