These agencies produce and manage the written and visual content a company uses to attract an audience and build a case for buying from them: blog posts, buyer guides, case studies, email newsletters, landing pages, sometimes video scripts or social copy. They're hired to plan a content calendar around what your buyers actually search for, write and edit the pieces, get them published and optimised for search, and report back on what's driving traffic, leads or rankings. Bring one in and your website starts publishing on a schedule instead of in bursts, your organic traffic has a chance to compound, and your sales team gets material to send prospects instead of starting from a blank slate.

Most people start looking here because content has stalled or never got going. Maybe there's a blog with six posts from two years ago, a marketing hire who's stretched too thin to write consistently, or a founder who's been doing it themselves and has run out of time or ideas. Often it's tied to a specific pain: competitors are outranking you on Google for terms you should own, sales keeps asking for collateral that doesn't exist, or leadership has decided SEO and inbound need to actually be a function rather than an afterthought. The common thread is a gap between wanting content to work as a growth channel and having the people or process to make that happen week after week.

Approaches split mainly on how much strategy versus pure production they offer. Some agencies act as an outsourced editorial team — you get a calendar, writers, an editor, and a publishing cadence, with limited involvement in your broader marketing plan. Others sit closer to consultants, building the keyword and content strategy, tying it to funnel stage and sales enablement, and only then producing the work, often alongside SEO or link-building services. There's also a split by depth of specialism: some agencies work across any industry with generalist writers and research processes, while others focus on a sector (SaaS, finance, healthcare) and bring subject-matter fluency that saves you briefing time.

When comparing them, look at how they handle subject-matter expertise versus generalist writing, whether reporting ties content to pipeline or just to traffic and rankings, how much editorial control and voice consistency you keep versus handing it fully to their process, and what happens to quality and turnaround at volume. Pricing models vary too — per-piece, retainer, or scoped project — and that often reflects whether you're buying steady output or a managed strategy with output as one part of it.
