These tools are what a presenter reaches for when they want the room to answer back. You build a poll, quiz, word cloud or open Q&A into your slides or a standalone app, the audience responds from their own phone or laptop, and the results appear live on the screen in front of them — a bar chart filling in, a leaderboard updating, a wall of submitted questions the host can pick from. For the person running the session, the change is immediate: instead of guessing whether the room is following along, they can see it, and instead of the same three people asking questions, everyone gets a way in.
The trigger is usually a specific, recurring frustration: a webinar or all-hands where attendees have their cameras off and nobody speaks up, a conference talk where the Q&A is dominated by whoever grabs the microphone first, a training session where you can't tell if anything landed, or a sales kickoff that needs to feel like more than a slide deck being read aloud. Sometimes it's an events team trying to prove to a sponsor that the audience was actually engaged, or an HR team trying to get honest, anonymous feedback in a town hall where nobody will raise a hand.
Providers split largely by scale and setting. Some are built for the single big live event — large screens, AV integration, hundreds or thousands of simultaneous responses, and production support for conference organizers. Others are built to sit inside the tools people already use every day: PowerPoint, Zoom, Teams, embedded directly into a recurring meeting or training session rather than a one-off show. A separate cluster leans hard into gamification — timed quizzes, points, leaderboards — aimed at training and team events where the goal is memorable competition rather than pure data capture. When comparing them, look at audience size limits, whether responses can be anonymous (important for sensitive internal feedback), how easily the polls integrate with your existing slides or meeting platform, whether attendees need to install an app or just scan a code, and how the data comes out afterward — a screenshot for a recap, or exportable analytics you can actually report on.
