Businesses in this category run the marketplaces that sit between people who have traffic (publishers, app developers, affiliates) and people who want to buy attention or action (advertisers, media buyers). Concretely, they aggregate ad inventory across thousands of sites and apps, match it against advertiser demand, serve the creative, track the clicks or conversions, and handle the payment on both sides — publisher gets paid per impression, click or action; advertiser gets reach or leads without ever calling a site owner directly. Once you're plugged into one, your job shifts from finding buyers or sellers one at a time to managing a feed: adjusting bids, swapping creatives, chasing down which sources actually convert.

People end up looking for this when one side of that equation has broken down. A publisher has traffic but low fill rates or thin CPMs because they only have a handful of direct advertisers and empty inventory the rest of the time. An advertiser has a product that converts on a cost-per-action basis but no sales team big enough to negotiate placements across the long tail of sites where their buyers actually are. Sometimes it's simpler than that — a growth or performance marketer has been told to hit an install or lead number this month and doesn't have the relationships or the tooling to buy that volume themselves.

The providers here differ mainly in what they specialise in and how hands-on they are. Some run self-serve platforms where you set your own targeting, bids and budgets and the system optimises from there; others are closer to a media-buying agency that manages campaigns for you and takes a cut. Payment models vary — CPM, CPC, CPA, CPL — and that choice changes who carries the risk if traffic doesn't convert. Many specialise by vertical or inventory type: mobile, native, affiliate offers, adult, gaming, display with header bidding for yield. What's worth comparing directly: minimum payout thresholds and payment terms, fraud detection and traffic quality controls, whether they own inventory outright or resell it from other networks, and how much visibility you get into where your money or your traffic is actually going.
